North Montana Tobacco-Free Coalition

The Coalition is part of the Montana Tobacco Use Prevention Program (MTUPP) which operates prevention efforts in 47 of 56 counties across the state. It is an affiliate program of the HELP Committee and serves Hill and Blaine counties.

What is the North Montana Tobacco-Free Coalition?

The North Montana Tobacco-Free Coalition is an educational effort to increase awareness of the health hazards of tobacco use and secondhand smoke and to promote policies that protect the public from the negative consequences of tobacco use, including E-cigarettes (Vaping).

Our Mission Statement:

The North Montana Tobacco-Free Coalition works to promote healthier and safer communities by promoting tobacco-free lifestyles and smoke-free environments.

Why do we need the Coalition?
  • 480,000 Americans and 1,600 Montanans die each year from tobacco related illnesses. That is more than alcohol, crack cocaine, heroin, homicide, suicide, car accidents, fires, and AIDS combined.
  • 18,000 kids under age 18 and alive in Montana will ultimately die prematurely from smoking.
  • 54,000 Americans and about 200 Montanans (people who do not smoke) die each year from secondhand tobacco smoke.
  • 1,300 Montana kids under the age of 18 will become regular smokers each year.
What are the goals of the Coalition?
  • Prevent Initiation of Tobacco Use Among Young People.
  • Eliminate Exposure to Secondhand Smoke.
  • Promote Cessation for Adults and Youth.
  • Counter the Marketing Efforts of Big Corporate Tobacco.
Your participation in the North Montana Tobacco-Free Coalition involves
only a small amount of time:
  • Coalition meets once per quarter for a working lunch meeting.
  • Come and hear how tobacco is a threat to our community, especially our youth.
  • Learn about big corporate tobacco’s tactics to continue addicting the public to its deadly products.
  • Hear about upcoming events and efforts to counter big tobacco at the national, state and local levels.
  • Network with other community leaders, professionals and concerned citizens to form partnerships which contribute to the community-wide prevention efforts to make our area a safer and healthier place.Everyone brings something important to our table.
